Windows 11 v21H2

Installation

Bypass incompatibility check: Universal MediaCreationTool wrapper

I installed it on two incompatible devices, using the Universal MediaCreationTool wrapper to bypass the incompatibilities.

Progress

I have installed it on two devices by now. In both cases, the installation was flawless.

Look and feel / User preferences

Windows 11 has the taskbar at the bottom, and doesn't allow QuickLaunch folders. Two preferences that can be overcome using third party tools.

Trial 1: OpenShell cross

  • install !WinaeroTweaker
    • in WinaeroTweaker, go to Windows 11 ► Enable Classic Taskbar
    • also click 'Enable System Icons' and enable clock, network & sound
  • install !OpenShell
  • small icons & don't group icons: registry tweak:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
    • small icons: "TaskbarSmallIcons"=dword:00000002
    • don't group icons: "TaskbarGlomLevel"=dword:00000002

This seems to work seamlessly with Windows 11, not breaking the Windows Explorer search.

It has the following advantages:
  • position the taskbar where you want: bottom, left, top, right
  • add a quick launch bar
  • ungroup taskbar items:
    in the navpane of the app, choose Taskbar: then in the 'Tweak behavior and superpowers' section, next to Combine tasbar buttons, choose Never)
  • classic context menus:
    in the navpane of the app, choose Explorer: then in the Make it top notch' section, check the Classic context menus checkbox

Hide language bar tick

This requires two steps. Both are required to hide the language bar under all circumstances!

Step 1: Turn Input Indicator system icon off

  • classic Control Panel > Notification Area Icons (Systeemvakpictogrammen) > Turn system icons on or off
  • Input Indicator: Off

Step 2: Language Bar: Hidden

  • (modern) Settings > Time & language
  • Typing
  • Advanced keyboard settings
  • in the Switching input methods section:
    • enable Let met use a different input method for each app window
    • enable Use the desktop language bar when it's available
  • then click on the Language bar options link
    • choose Hidden
    • click Apply

Volume control !EarTrumpet app tick

In Windows 10, you were able to click the Volume icon and then use the left/right arrow keys to lower/increase the volume. In Windows 11, this is no longer possible, making the Volume icon part of the Quick Settings. The third-party app EarTrumpet made this possible again.

On my PC at the office, the default Volume icon returned after a couple of days, I suppose due to a domain group policy, so there the use of the EarTrumpet app has become superfluous...

Cascade windows

Trial 1: vbscript cross

If you rightclick the taskbar in Windows 10, you have the possibility to Cascade windows.

The following .vbs script does the same...

objShell.CascadeWindows()

… in Windows 10.

However, in Windows 11, nothing happens!

Nevertheless, the method is present in Windows 11. Issue the following PowerShell command: 
New-Object -ComObject "Shell.Application" | gm | select Name, MemberType

Trial 2: FastKeys tick

Configuration:
  • choose Shortcuts in the navbar on the left
  • choose New (+) in the top right corner
  • choose Command instead of Run in the blue colored top left corner
  • click on the Library icon (booklet) in the black colored bar at the top
  • choose Window in the Command section
  • scroll down to Cascade Windows, select it and click on the Select button
  • the following appears:

  • position your cursor in the Shortcut field and press the desired shortcut key (e.g. Alt+C)
  • click on OK

Trial 3: AutoHotKey tick

Create an .ahk script with the same command as the FastKeys command:

Using the Ahk2Exe, you can convert the .ahk script to an executable. Afterwards, you can put a shortcut to this .exe file wherever you want.

Finetuning

VPN settings

In Windows 10, you could access VPN settings easily by clicking the Network or the Wi-Fi icon in the system tray / notification area. In Windows 11, the Wi-Fi icon only shows the available Wi-Fi networks, the Network icon opens the quick settings panel, containing Night ligt, Focus assit, Project etc. If VPN isn't available here, you can add it.

The Power icon also opens the quick settings panel.

On my Home PC, I don't have a wired network, so I don't have Network icon, neither have I a Power icont, so I cannot access the VPN settings using either icon. It is available through Settings (Win+I) > Network & internet > VPN, but that's rather cumbersome.

What I did, was adding the Control Center icon (Quick settings icon in later versions of Windows 11) to the system tray / notification area:
  • in Windows 10 & early versions of Windows 11: in a Windows Explorer window, go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Notification Area Icons (Systeemvakpictogrammen)\System Icons and set the Control Center to On.
  • in later versions of Windows 11: StartAllBack: Tray icons section - Turn system icons on or off: Quick settings > On

Issues

Windows 11 File Explorer Command Bar missing

Right after the upgrade to Windows 11, the File Explorer showed no Command Bar.

Using StartAllBack, I was able to choose the Win10 Ribbon UI (from the Explorer section in the TOC), but whenever I chose Win11 Command Bar, it didn't appear.

Then I found this tip on MAJOR GEEKS.

Apparently, the Win11 Command Bar was blocked, you can unblock it issuing the following registry tweak:

Afterwards, restart Explorer.

Taskbar

  • that the taskbar is at the bottom and can't be moved, okay, I can live with it
  • that I can't add a QuickLaunch bar, okay, I can live with it, I'll use Pin to taskbar, but...
  • nearly half (11 out of 24) of the items I'd like to pin to the taskbar, can't be pinned to the taskbar (Event Viewer, WinSCP, PSPad, IB Expert, MySQL Workbench, …)
Solution: StartAllBack

Icons

.bat / .exe files which I gave a custom icon, sometimes appear with a blank page icon.

Solution: move these icons from the network location to a local drive

Searching in Explorer

I can't put my cursor in the Search field if I launch the File Explorer throught the default shortcut.

Workaround:
  • open the 'old' Control Panel: now the Search field is accessible, even if I move to 'regular' folders

Solution: use StartAllBack instead of OpenShell.

Windows 11 v22H2

Installation

  • download the .iso for your PC, directly from the Ms site, or using the MediaCreationTool
    • in my case, I need(ed) the following version: Language English (United States)
  • try to install - if you get:
    • This PC doesn't currently meet Windows 11 system requirements (processor, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, …)
      or
    • We can't tell if your PC is ready to continue installing Windows 11,
  • then execute the Skip_TPM_Check_on_Dynamic_Update.cmd file (on your own risk)
    execute it only once (if you do it a 2nd time, you undo the installation of the skip TPM check!)
  • normally the setup procedure will then launch
  • now uninstall !MSEdgeRedirect*
  • Choose what to keep: preferably Keep files, settings, and apps
  • Ready to install - To recap, you've chosen:
    Install Windows 11 (Pro),
    Keep files, settings, and apps
  • after installation, check the version by issuing the winver command
* during the installation, I got the message:
File Update Required - Ms Edge has updated, as such the IFEO exclusion file for MSEdgeRedirect is out of date and needs to be updated. Update Now? - I chose 'Yes', but maybe it had been better to disable Edge Redirect

Customization

After installation, some of the customizations I did in v21H2 were lost/reverted. So I needed to do them again.

Turn system icons off

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Notification Area Icons\System Icons:
  • Volume: Off (I'm using EarTrumpet instead)
  • Power: Off (my laptop is deprived of a battery, so it always works on a wall plug)
  • Input Indicator: Off (I'm always using the same language)
  • Action Center: Off

Remove Action Center Icon from notification area

In Ultimate Windows Tweaker 4.x (niet meer in 5.x), search for action center - you find it in Customization ► Taskbar tab ► Appearance pane - then check the following option:
  • Remove Action Center Icon From Notification Area
In the modern Settings: System > Notifications:
  • disable Do not disturb (yes I know, it sounds strange...)

No Calendar when clicking on the date in the taskbar*

Be aware, that if you remove the Action Center from the notification area, that you can no longer access the calendar by clicking on the date in the taskbar. So either use the Action Center, or... you can get the calendar (or at least an older (Win7?) iteration of it) back by adding the following registry mod:
  • goto Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell
  • add a DWORD entry with name UseWin32TrayClockExperience and give it value 1
The calendar immediately appears.

Notification area icons

The only notification areas that remain on my machine, are:
  • PowerToys
  • Samsung Magician
  • Windows Security
  • EitherMouse
  • ClipClip
  • WiFi

Issues

Snap Windows

In Settings > System > Multitasking > Snap windows, they removed the following option:
  • When I resize a snapped windows, simultaneously resize any adjacent snapped window

Old Calculator

Was already installed in the SysBup, but I mention it here, because of the other classic apps.

Classic Paint

Install Paint Classic 2022 (Paint Classic 2016 is mentioned in 'Installed apps', 2022 not, but that's not the point)
  • install (follow the instructions from the to Get Windows 10 Classic Paint in Windows 11.png or website)
  • apply the add2defaultApps registry tweak
  • apply the word-paste-ole-fix tweak
  • try the last fix by copying a Paint image and pasting it in Word
  • uninstall the modern Paint app (Settings > Apps > Installed apps) - otherwise this modern Paint will be opened if you type mspaint in the Run box!

Classic Notepad

  • uninstall the modern Notepad app
  • apply the RestoreClassicNotepad registry tweak
  • [zZz...apply the CreateExeAliasForNotepad registry tweak (https://www.top-password.com/blog/create-execution-aliases-for-specific-apps-in-windows-11/)]
    ▲ the above always shows lowercase 'notepad' (command) in Windows Search, whereas below solution shows proper case 'Notepad' (App) in Windows Search ▼
  • create a shortcut to notepad.exe (target: %windir%\system32\notepad.exe) in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories
    that's simply the way it works in Windows 10, and still works in Windows 11
  • try to preview a .txt attachment in Outlook - this should now normally work

Well, meanwhile, I'm working on Lemmens instead of Pergolesi, but for sports, I updated Pergolesi as well.
  • download the .iso for your PC, directly from the Ms site, or using the MediaCreationTool
    • in my case, I need(ed) the following version: Language English (United States)
  • try to install - if you get:
    • This PC doesn't currently meet Windows 11 system requirements (processor, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, …)
      or
    • We can't tell if your PC is ready to continue installing Windows 11,
  • then the AveYo MediaCreationTool doesn't work anymore, but the builtbybel Flyby11 script does the job in the same way (actually using the Windows Server wrapper).
  • Choose what to keep: preferably Keep files, settings, and apps
  • Ready to install - To recap, you've chosen:
    Install Windows 11 (Pro),
    Keep files, settings, and apps
  • after installation, check the version by issuing the winver command
* during the installation, I got the message:

Installation

Pergolesi - Dell Studio XPS 1647 (07/2010)

Again for sports, I updated Pergolesi as well.
  • download the .iso for your PC, directly from the Ms site, or using the MediaCreationTool
    • in my case, I need(ed) the following version: Language English (United States)
  • try to install - i got:
    • The PC must support Secure Boot,
  • I again used the builtbybel Flyby11 script to do the job (actually using the Windows Server wrapper).
    • there was a new(er) Flyoobe 1.31 version, but that had too many bells and whistles,
      so I simply re-used the old script (0.17)
  • Choose what to keep: preferably Keep files, settings, and apps
  • Ready to install - To recap, you've chosen:
    Install Windows 11 (Pro),
    Keep files, settings, and apps
  • after installation, check the version by issuing the winver command

Lemmens - HP ProBook 650 G5 (07/2020)

I had an issue here as well. The following message appeared:

This PC doesn't currently meet Windows 11 system requirements.
Here's why:
  • We couldn't update the system reserved partition.
I applied the following solution: https://superuser.com/questions/1863462/windows-11-pro-24h2-update-we-couldnt-update-the-system-reserved-partition:
  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator: Search for cmd, right-click on Command Prompt, and select "Run as administrator".
  2. Mount the System Partition: Type mountvol y: /s and press Enter. This will assign the Y: drive letter to the System Partition.
  3. Navigate to the Fonts Folder: Switch to the Y drive by typing Y: and pressing Enter. Then, navigate to the Fonts folder with cd EFI\Microsoft\Boot\Fonts.
  4. Delete Font Files: Type del *.* and press Enter to delete the font files. Confirm the deletion if prompted. The system may ask you if you are sure to continue, press Y and then Enter to continue.

  • open WinaeroTweaker
  • File Explorer category > Customize This PC Folders subcategory
  • wait for the right pane to appear
  • then click on Restore Windows 10 folders, and you get Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures and Videos instantly!

  • remove the folders you don't need to be shown

Group by (none)

Als "group by" globaal was uitgeschakeld, blijft dat na de update ook behalve voor de mappen die je net onder This PC hebt toegevoegd.

Notification area icons

The notification area icons that remain on my machine, are:

  • Windows Security
  • !OneDrive
  • !ClipClip
  • !OpenVPN GUI
  • !AquaSnap
  • (Brave)

And always visible:
  • !WiFi
  • AIMP
  • !EarTrumpet

ModernFlyouts

The ModernFlyouts app didn't work anymore in 24H2, but there was already a beta version available that works on my machine:

Open File Explorer to OneDrive

After the update, the File Explorer did no longer start to OneDrive. You can use Winaero Tweaker to choose a custom folder, but then it uses the real path (D:\OneDrive) instead of the top level namespace (OneDrive tout court). You can solve it by using a reg hack, making use of OneDrive's CLSID:
